Looking for a little help...

I currently don't wear a medical ID bracelet (gasp!) I did a little stint last summer with one. I really liked it, although it was really noticeable, and I'm not sure I'm ready to go that route again (I lost the old one). Other than that I would say I've spent most of my 18 years with diabetes without one. I've been extremely lucky to have never needed one either, but it's scary to think of what happens when you do need one and you don't wear one.

So, I'd like to see what everyone else wears. Links, photos, etc. Did you get it engraved onto a bracelet, necklace, tattoo? Does anyone know what is acceptable and what's not? What will an EMT check?

Thanks!!! :)

I wear a gold bracelet that my wife bought me over 10 years ago. It's a pretty standard men's gold bracelet, but it has a plate on it with the medic alert sign on it (what the heck do they call that thing again...).

On the back side it is engraved with my name and "Insulin Dependent Diabetic" on it.

You can see shots of it just in happenstance on the couple of posts I did about my tattoo and the temporary tattoo.

I might consider getting an actual tattoo sometime, but I'm not sure about that yet.

My neighbor is a paramedic and he and I are frequently discussing the various aspects of diabetes and emergency situations. He told me that they are trained to inspect every piece of jewelry. He also said never, ever to leave home without id (although now that they carry bg meters in the ambulance they usually do a bg test immediately if they find someone unconscious.

In Search of Balance makes some pretty neat ones. YOu might want to go check out some of the archives on her blog.
